    Description

    Welcome.
    WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT IT:
This is an exceptionally fine bolo made with mosaic inlay into brown shell of a horse head with inlaid silver reins and bridle, made with the details Dan Simplicio used, such as the forelock and fine muzzle, scalloped bezel and his
famous leaves as well as se turquoise and coral hand cut stones. It has differences from the ones by Chauncy and Isabel but it works well with their work, so I show one of their rings with it in two pictures. You can see the differences clearly: the raindrops they always used which you see in the ring and the differences
    between
the horses. I've also included a picture above of another of Dan Simplicio's horse bolos which is available separately in my store. This piece was made in 1957-67 and has its original tie and fine silver tips. It's absolutely glorious and the only one of this style by Dan Simplicio which I've ever seen.
    CONDITION: excellent vintage, wearable, collectible
BACKGROUND: 1917-1969 Dan Simplicio's work is in the C.G.Wallace catalog, and every important collection, gallery and museum. Dan Simplicio was one of C. G. Wallace's favorite smiths. He was versatile and prolific. His work was prominently featured in the 1975 Sotheby's auction of the C. G. Wallace collection. Work from this collection is in the permanent collection of the Heard Museum in Phoenix. Dan Simplicio was one of the great master silversmiths in Zuni history. He was vastly talented and worked in many techniques and styles. Truly a great master, his work commands top prices and resides in the best museums and galleries. He is one of the most important Zuni artists from the CG Wallace period and his naturalistic free form style of work has become one of the hallmarks of that era.
    MEASUREMENTS:
    • 2-5/8" H x 1-1/2" W
    • tips height 2-1/4"
    • cord length w tips: 38"
    • date: 1957-1967
    • unmarked for metal content which is usual for those times but it's sterling silver .925
    • unsigned by the artist which was usual, but confidently attributed to Dan Simplicio, Zuni
    SUMMARY:
This is a very rare, stunning, bolo made by a great
    master, one
of the best Zuni artists and one of my favorites. He almost never signed his work, only very rarely, but I attribute it to Dan Simplicio with considerable confidence. This is wearable art at its best and it is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, suitable for all collections and a true delight to wear. The horse is beautiful with a fine muzzle and fine details. What a beauty. It is an elegant and exceptionally beautiful bolo. It is wonderful.

When I include pages from published books in my listings it is in accordance with Fair Use Law, which permits the use of source material for discussion, reference, education and criticism.
Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target. All the books have errors, so in addition to counterchecking, I have developed some expertise over the years and I do care about getting it right, so as more information comes to light I update my listings and also get in touch with my previous buyers, to inform them of any changes in attributions. I am sincerely committed to ongoing accuracy.
