What’s up with the name?

What’s up with the name?

Makamashi (MAH-KAH MAH-SHEE) is the Hausa word for ‘energy’. When I flipped through my Hausa-English dictionary and saw the word, I just knew that this was the name for this project before I even saw the meaning. This past year officially being in business, it has grown on me and the meaning continues to make more and more sense to me.

See, everything is energy. At a quantum level, everything is made up of mostly empty space and vibrating energy. Everything in the universe is just vibrating energy. Crystals, cardboard boxes, rugs, you! Almost everything you’ll find in the shop is handmade and I believe that handmade items carry a bit of the energy of the maker.

Human beings are quite unstable on a subatomic level and easily get affected by their surroundings, both in a palpable and intangible sense. Have you ever walked into a spa and the atmosphere immediately made you feel relaxed? Or on the other hand, walked into a room where the air was thick with tension? What we’re exposed to affects us and I like to think of our homes as safe spaces, that recharges us and sets our vibes and frequency right for interacting with the world.

I personally love how quantum mechanics gives the analytical mind an explanation for what so many of us intuitively feel: that all around us and all within us is nothing but energy.

Makamashi is a reminder to notice this buzzing energy all around us and the pieces I’ve carefully curated in the shop bring me so much joy and I hope they’ll do the same for you!
